It’s that time of the year again!
Time for the Ocean Bay Park Volunteer Fire Department raffle!
Truthfully, I do not know what they are raising money for (I can only assume it is to buy the grossly overweight members of the motley “fire department” braziers). I was duped into buying this ticket in the first place (I was under the impression there would be punch and pie), but I am sure it is for a good cause? Training more cats to eradicate the deer?
I am sharing this today because this ticket provided some insight as to how quickly Fire Island is progressing both socially and technologically. As you can see above, the prizes include both a bicycle and a color television.
Really, a color television? In what decade are we living in that television needs to be preceded by the word “color”? Should bicycle also be listed as “two-wheeled human motor machine”? Would the Ocean Bay Park populous expect a black and white TV controlled by knobs if we were to omit the word “color”? The fact that the words “color television” and the a date in the year 2012 exist on the same piece of paper saddens me.
Also, it’s not a donation if you receive something in return (the raffle ticket) – that is called a purchase.
