Hello, I’m Mac!

I’m Tyler ‘Mac’ Fox, a thru-hiker, bikepacker, ultrarunner, climber, river runner, skier, and van dweller—essentially a purveyor of any and all outdoor activities.

But my life was not always so.

I was once a young university graduate with aspirations of attending law school and becoming a lawyer.

So what happened?

It all started in Brazil in 2011, but that’s a story for another time (if you think that time is now, click here).

Suffice to say, I have changed a lot.

The short version of the story is that I no longer know what I want, but I know that I’m happy where I’m at in life right now, and isn’t that what we tell ourselves is important?

I hope so.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if I’m hiking the Pacific Crest Trail or riding a bicycle across the Australian Outback; so long as I have the freedom of being able to say “yes” to new people and experiences, life is good.

I don’t know if I can ever go back to not living out of my backpack – or van – but maybe one day, old age will have something to say about that (if I am lucky enough to make it that long).

Quick Facts

  • Left-handed, right-footed
  • Speaks Portuguese, broken Spanish, and an impressive amount of Japanese (assuming you speak none)
  • PADI Rescue Diver
  • Self-styled limbo champion
  • Never broken a bone (except for fingers)
  • Horrible-looking, perpetually ingrown toenails
  • Not big on dark chocolate (but I’m coming around)
  • Originally from Southern California
  • Cats and dogs
  • Top three backcountry foods: cheese, peanut butter, and M&M’s
  • Embarrassingly inflexible hamstrings (I’m working on it)

So what’s Halfway Anywhere?

To sum it up, I suppose you could say it’s “an exercise in investigating and subsequently facilitating access to some of the greatest adventures on Earth.” That sounds cool, right? At least more compelling than “guy living in a van does things outdoors.”

It’s weird writing about yourself like this.

But that’s me, and that’s my story, I guess. At least thus far.
