About Mac

Hello! I’m Mac. I like to go on long walks in the mountains, around mountains, and sometimes up mountains.

Then, sometimes, I write about them. Yes?

But my life was not always so. No, I was once a young university graduate with aspirations of attending law school and becoming a lawyer. So what happened? How did I go from hoping to one day attend law school to hoping to one day live in a van? It all started in Brazil back in 2011. But that’s a story for another time (if you think that time’s now, click here).

For now, suffice it to say that I have changed a lot.

The short of it is that I no longer know what I want (except, you know, a van), but I know that I’m happy where I’m at in life right now and isn’t that the type of thing that we tell ourselves is important? I hope so. Honestly, it doesn’t matter if I’m hiking the Pacific Crest Trail or riding a bicycle across the Australian Outback, so long as I have the freedom of being able to say “yes” to new people and experiences life is good. I don’t know if I can ever go back to not living out of my backpack (but maybe one day old age will have something to say about that – if I am lucky enough to make it that long).

So what’s Halfway Anywhere? If I were to sum it up as a thesis title, I suppose you could call it, “An exercise in investigating and subsequently facilitating access to some of the greatest adventures on Earth”. That sounds cool, right? A lot more compelling than “Homeless guy goes hiking” at least. That was a lot of text, I think it’s time for pictures.

It’s weird writing about yourself like this, you know? Whenever I read someone’s description of themselves in a place like this (i.e. the “About” page of a personal blog), I can’t help but think, “Barf. What a bag.” I think I should recruit one of my friends to write something here instead. But how do I know who to trust? I guess it would defeat the purpose if I editorialized what they wrote, huh? I guess I’ll just stick to the facts then.

Thus far I’ve hiked both the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail and spent a lot of time hiking in both Japan and Nepal with noteworthy stints in New Zealand, Tasmania, and Brazil as well. I’ve also hiked the Portuguese Camino de Santiago and there was the one time I rode a bicycle across Australia for some reason. I guess that’s most of it. I did another stint on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2019 and have since then been trying my hand(s) at climbing. That said, Peru, Nepal (again), Chile, Bolivia, and New Zealand (again) are still high on my list. But who knows? Maybe I’ll get kicked in the head by a horse tomorrow and never walk again.

How are we feeling? A lot of text? Time for more pictures and some bullet points? Yeah, good idea.
