Rocket Fuel: Fire Island’s Drink of Choice

Rocket Fuel-craved visitors come to Fire Island to do two things: to escape the horrors of Long Island and to get drunk off their asses and make fools of themselves.

Now these two groups are not mutually exclusive, but it’s those from the latter who interest us today.

Most of the steroid pumping misogynistic meatheads visiting Fire Island in search of some sleazy, spray-tanned ass wouldn’t be caught dead with a “girly” drink (read: anything frozen), BUT thankfully they have found a loophole in the system.

Enter Rocket Fuel. A Rocket Fuel contains enough alcohol (at least in theory) to take down even the most seasoned of drinkers, and enough sugar to sacrifice the following day to the Porcelain Gods. This makes it the drink of choice for many partygoers. Yet if you knew what your money was really buying you, then you may reconsider that drink purchase.

What is Rocket Fuel?

So what is this Rocket Fuel?

Basically, it is a piña colada with a Bacardi 151 floater – nothing special (but don’t tell that to the manly-men).

We made our Rocket Fuel in bulk batches that included pineapple juice, coco lopez, dark rum, amaretto, and water (and sometimes a little milk) which was then poured into slushy machines and served to the thirsty masses of money burning vacationers.

And don’t forget the cherry garnish.

Rocket Fuel Mixer
This spout ruins lives.

Each bar concocts their version differently, but all charge a premium for the drink – usually somewhere between $12-$16 (hint: it’s not worth it). Why the Rocket Fuel became synonymous with Fire Island, I do not know, but if you’re going to visit the Island of Fire, then do yourself a favor and save your money (for those $9 Coronas and ferry rides).

Rocket Fuel Recipe

Here is a Rocket Fuel recipe so that you can make your own rocket fuel:

Rocket Fuel Jug
I call it the “party jug”.

Blend it all, top your drink with a Bacardi 151 floater, and you will be ready to enjoy life as it is enjoyed on Fire Island – drunkenly.
