Since I have yet to establish a permanent residence on this planet of ours (and I’m open to suggestions as to where this should be), I have nowhere to print and display all the billions of bytes of photographic data I have been amassing in my wandering.
Consequently, the internet (and more specifically this website) has become my improvised living room (I hope you took your filthy shoes off before coming in here); so it is here I am forced to hang my photograph making machine’s greatest triumphs.
If you are interested in seeing all the shots that didn’t make it onto this particular mantle, you can follow me on Instagram@halfwayanywhere or flickr.
Alternatively, if reading words is more your thing, you can find my 2015 year-end summary here.
So without further ado, here are my favorite photos from The following are my favorite photos from 2015. I love hearing what you think, so please leave a comment below to let me know.
Sunset photos can make even the most undeserving places look worthy of a visit. (Fukui, Japan)Shirakawa-gō, one of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. (Gifu, Japan)Somehow this wall of advertising has become possibly the most iconic sight in Japan’s second largest city. (Osaka, Japan)An owl who is held prisoner in a cafe so that people can take photos of him and post said photos on the internet. Oh god. I’m one of them. (Osaka, Japan)Todai-ji – where the world’s largest bronze statue of Buddha lives. (Nara, Japan)A Japanese rabbit. (Okunojima, Japan)I thought this one turned out pretty well. (Nagoya, Japan)One of the Three Views of JApan – the torii at Itsukushima Shrine. Honestly, I didn’t see what the big deal was. (Miyajima, Japan)Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park’s Atomic Bomb Dome visible – a seriously powerful place. (Hiroshima, Japan)Should one day I decide to become a local fisherman, this wouldn’t be a terrible place to be spending my mornings. (Shizuoka, Japan)One of the few (official) campgrounds in Japan’s Kita Alps. (Tateyama, Japan)Yarigatake as seen from the summit of Obamidake. (Kita Alps, Japan)Sunrise on the way up to the summit of Mount Okuhotaka (奥穂高岳), Japan’s third highest mountain. (Kita Alps, Japan)You know what I like to do in the morning? Walk around the icy sides of mountains. (Kita Alps, Japan)The Mount Hotaka traverse – commonly considered the most dangerous hike in Japan. (Kita Alps, Japan)Inside a Japanese love hotel. (Okayama, Japan)Probably the best photo of the stars I managed to capture this year. Next year I will have to try harder. (Kita Alps, Japan)After a successful circumnavigation of Lake Biwa (Japan’s largest) on a mamachari. (Shiga, Japan)If you’re ever in Japan, don’t bother visiting their sand dunes – there’s a lot more photo trickery going on here than just the floating. (Tottoti, Japan)Taipei as seen from Elephant Mountain – worth a hike up if you’re even in the city. (Taipei, Taiwan)Obligatory photo of some deliciously spicy beef noodle soup. (Taipei, Taiwan)Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. (Taipei, Taiwan)Memorial Hall Square and the National Concert Hall. (Taipei, Taiwan)Inside the Formosa Boulevard station on the Kaosiung MRT. (Kaosiung Taiwan)One of the sights dotting Lotus Pond – I suggest a night or early morning visit. (Kaohsiung, Taiwan)A sunrise acclimatization hike to 16,732 ft / 5,100 m. (Dingboche, Nepal)I love the people I meet while traveling. (Dingboche, Nepal)My spirit guide dog who accompanied me through the mountains to this view of Ama Dablam. (Khunde, Nepal)The highest point on Nepal’s Three Passes Trek, Kongma-La (18,045 ft / 5,500 m). So exhausted.I really need to buy a remote shutter release and start doing some star trails. (Dzongla, Nepal)
The San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado are the first real challenge of the Continental Divide Trail (that is, if you’re hiking northbound and you…
The water sources Continental Divide Trail hikers drink from in New Mexico are often less-than-ideal, and hikers are often filling their water bottles from water sources that cows are either drinking from or pooping in. Something to filter out the sediment (poop) is a must.
Enjoyed the year in photos.
I heard Hogwart’s is missing some owls.
Meanwhile, I’ve got too large a parliament.
I know a few adventurers who settled in Alaska.

Amazeballs maybe, but also incredibly crowded (pro tip: if you cowboy camp, they won’t charge you to stay).
