Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts Review

The Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts are functional trail running shorts that are suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities.

My journey with shorts – typically the only thing I wear outdoors – has been a long one. I started with shorts and boxers, then moved into shorts with a brief liner, and am not in my shorts with a boxer brief liner phase. I want to say this is the final phase of my evolution, but I could have said that at any previous stage, so who knows?

I’ve been using the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts (not to be confused with the Aenergy TR Shorts, which don’t have a liner) for running, hiking, and shorter bicycle rides. As far as shorts go, they get me just about as excited as I could imagine for a piece of clothing—I’m a big fan.

Here’s everything you need to know about them (and probably a little more).

Pros and Cons

+ Boxer brief liner that stays put
+ Zippered back pocket with room for snacks or keys

The Good

The Pockets

The Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts have four pockets. There’s one rear zippered pocket, two stretchy side pockets, and one thigh pocket on the liner. The rear zippered pocket is large enough to fit keys or bars but not a phone (at least not a phone with a 6.7″ screen). The side pockets are great for gels, snacks, or keys as well (although I trust the zippered pocket more for key storage). Excellent pockets – I love them. The one thing I would suggest for improvement? Possibly have a small bit of elastic overlap at the top of the pocket so you can lock in larger items and be sure to keep them in the pockets.

The Liner

I used to like brief liners in my shorts, but I’m now big on the boxer brief style of the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts. The liner is longer than the shorts, which is another thing I’ve grown to like about these shorts. In addition, the liner stays put while moving, so I’m not constantly having to pull the legs down. The pocket on the liner is tight to the shorts, and – unlike shorts, I’ve used in the past like the Brooks Sherpa – the liner pocket is entirely attached to the liner. That is, you do not access the pocket from the outside of the shorts; you access it by pulling the shorts up. However, the liner doesn’t come up super high, and it’s still possible to get some chafe up higher on your thighs (if that’s something you struggle with, like me).

The Feel

The shorts are more durable than some other shorts I’ve had in the past, which could maybe be an issue in warmer temperatures, but I haven’t had any trouble yet. Hopefully, this means that with extended use, I’m not going to end up wearing a hole in the crotch of the liner or ripping the pockets – this is oftentimes the issue in my other shorts.

The Sizing

Unlike most shorts available in small, medium, large, etc., the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts are available in eight sizes, from 28 to 42. Be sure to look at the sizing chart because the numbers may not necessarily correspond to what you think. I have been wearing a size 32 which has a 32.3-33.5 in / 82-85 cm waist and a

The Okay

The Side Pockets

As I mentioned above, the side pockets of the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts don’t have an interior fold at the top, which means that there’s no way to secure larger items. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since the pockets are tight to your waist, but it would be nice to have something that would guarantee nothing in the side pockets will fall out (or at least provide a little more insurance).

The Bad

The Price

Possibly the worst part of the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts is the price. They’re not cheap at $100 a pair – especially if you’re using them for your primary training shorts and you want to use a pair every day (which I would generally assume necessitates more than a single pair). That said, if you’re using them for thru-hiking, there’s no need for a second (or a third) pair. And hopefully the durable materials will hold up for the entirety of your adventure.

The Colors

I love the orange color of the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts. However, it’s the only color available. It looks like there used to be a blue and a black version available in an earlier version (you may still be able to find them on the Mammut site), but as of now, orange is the only option. Is it awesome? Yes. Is it for everyone? No.

Wrap Up

I’ve added the Mammut Aenergy TR 2 in 1 Shorts to my current gear list, and they’re officially – at the time of writing this – my new favorite shorts.

I’m interested in how they hold up over the long term (I’m talking months of continuous wear), but I’ll be taking them with me on my upcoming hike of the Pyrenean Haute Route. Note that Mammut advises that you hang dry (or at the least not tumble dry) these shorts. I would follow this advice if you want to make these shorts last.
