Four people are engaged in an intense game of Spikeball on a sandy beach by the ocean. Positioned around the circular net, they play energetically as beachgoers swim and stroll along the shoreline, all under a clear blue sky.

Spikeball: More Fun Than You Think

The beach. A place for families, a place for the wealthy. A place for hobos, a place for marijuana enthusiasts. A place for fun and a place for games. What games you ask? Well besides the usual volleyball, football, soccer, frisbee, saddlebacking, and burnlegging there exists something known in some circles as Spikeball.

What is this Spikeball?

In its simplest form, this game borrows volleyball rules, but instead of hitting a ball over a net, your (team’s) aim is to bounce a small rubber ball off the trampolinesque centerpiece (three-volley max, score on serve, spiking encouraged). Games go to 21 and can continue for some time depending on the skillfulness of the players (and can attract quite a crowd due to the queer nature of the sport).
